2015-12-22 Tue

Like India, Burma was a colony of Britain. When India got wrapped in the Freedom struggle, Burma too witnessed the rise of the spirit of Nationalism. This eventually led to the nationalist party AFPFL, under the leadership of Aung San. Shortly after India, Burma, too, achieved freedom on 4th January 1948.

The series of stamps issued on the occasion are known as Burmese Independence stamp series which comes in different colours and with different denominations: ½ Burmese Anna being the lowest and 8 Burmese Annas being the highest denomination. The stamp features the portrait of Aung San – The Father of the Nation, the map of Burma and a sculpture of Burmese lion.

Shortly after the release of independence stamps, Burmese Government issued a new series of stamps. This series was issued on the first anniversary of the day on which the national leaders were assassinated.
